What is done at the scene largely determines how the later compensation process will proceed. The following steps aim to protect both your safety and your rights.
1. Safety first
Stop the vehicle, switch on the hazard lights and place the warning triangle at a suitable distance. In heavy traffic, get out of the vehicle on the safe side.
2. If anyone is injured, call 112 immediately
In accidents involving injury or death, the medical team and the police or gendarmerie must be called. In these accidents the report is drawn up by the law enforcement authorities; take care not to move the vehicles before they arrive. Even if an injury seems minor, visiting a health facility is important both for your health and for proving any future claims.
3. Take photos before moving the vehicles
If there is only material damage and traffic allows, take the following shots before moving the vehicles to the side:
• General views of both vehicles from all four corners
• Close-up photos of the damaged areas
• The other vehicle's licence plate
• The position of the vehicles on the road, skid marks and debris
• Traffic lights, signs and road markings
• A wide-angle general view of the accident scene
The date and time information of the photos should be preserved.
4. Get the other party's details
Record the driver's full name, driving licence details, vehicle registration and compulsory traffic insurance policy details. Taking a photo of the policy is the most practical method.
5. Complete the accident report
In accidents involving only material damage, the parties may fill in the accident report together if they agree. The report can also be completed electronically via e-Devlet or the mobile application of the Insurance Information and Monitoring Center. If the parties cannot agree, the police or gendarmerie should be called. The accident sketch and statements in the report are decisive in determining fault; read it carefully before signing.
6. Note witness details
If anyone saw the accident, take their names and contact details.
7. Apply to the insurer in time
The damage claim is made to the other party's compulsory traffic insurer. If you have your own casco policy, also notify your casco insurer.
8. Read the documents you sign at the payment stage
During the insurance payment you may be asked to sign a release or a settlement form. It is advisable not to sign without assessing whether the amount paid covers your actual loss.
